I made this photograph in 1996 on his, Nelson Mandela’s, first official visit to the UK as President of South Africa. This was as he inspected the Guard of Honour at Horse Guards Parade at Whitehall.
This is one of my favourite photos of my career thus far. I will always treasure that moment when the dust cleared to reveal the great man and the soldier sneaking a peak at him.
It was used in the Daily Express quite large but credited to one of their staff photographers, something I still get very annoyed about from time to time.
I was at London News Service at the time which shortly thereafter was enveloped into Alpha Press. I wonder if Alpha will be including this in their collections going out globally tonight? I don’t have access to their archives so I don’t know. Perhaps I’ll send a reminder.
